Support & FAQ

Answers to common questions about Yosemite High Country Map.

Getting Started

What is Yosemite High Country Map?

An iPhone app with a fully offline topographic map of Yosemite's high country — roughly Tuolumne Meadows to the surrounding summits — built from USGS 1-meter lidar terrain. It includes a curated hike catalog, point-to-point trail routing, placemarks, and GPS track recording.

Does the app work offline?

Yes — completely. The whole high country basemap ships inside the app, so the map, hike catalog, routing, placemarks, and GPS all work with airplane mode on and no cell coverage. Nothing needs to be downloaded before a trip.

When is an internet connection needed?

  • Optional high-detail map pack — a one-time download that adds extra map detail
  • iCloud placemark sync — syncing placemarks across devices happens when a connection is available

Everything else is on-device.

The Map

Where does the map data come from?

Terrain comes from USGS 3DEP 1-meter lidar (elevation and hillshade). Trails, roads, and features come from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL), and lakes, rivers, and streams from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset. The basemap itself is rendered by the developer from these sources.

How accurate is the map?

The terrain is professional-grade survey data, but trails, water sources, and conditions change with season and weather. Treat the app as a planning and reference tool — carry a paper map and compass, and check current NPS conditions and permit requirements before your trip.

Hikes & Routing

What's in the hike catalog?

Curated high-country hikes with measured distances, elevation gain, and elevation profiles, drawn on the map so you can see exactly where each one goes.

How does trail routing work?

Pick any two points and the app computes a route along the trail network, entirely on-device — with distance and elevation profile for the route.

Placemarks & Tracks

How do I create a placemark?

Tap the placemark button in the toolbar, position the crosshairs at your desired location, and confirm — then name and categorize the point. Placemarks can optionally sync across your devices through iCloud — enable or disable this any time in Settings.

Can I record and export GPS tracks?

Yes. Record a track as you hike (recording continues with the screen off), then save it and export it as a GPX file to share or use in other apps.

Can I import my own GPX files?

Yes — open a GPX file with the app and its tracks and waypoints appear on the map.

Privacy & Data

What data does the app collect?

Effectively none. There are no accounts, no ads, and no analytics. Your location and everything you create stay on your device (placemarks optionally sync through your own iCloud account). See the Privacy Policy for details.
